The Challenge
A mid-sized manufacturing company had grown rapidly through acquisition, resulting in a patchwork of industrial control systems with inconsistent security practices. Management was concerned about their exposure to ransomware and other threats targeting manufacturing.
The company needed a comprehensive assessment of their OT security posture, followed by remediation that wouldn't disrupt 24/7 production operations. They also faced upcoming compliance requirements that demanded improved documentation and controls.
Complicating matters, several critical systems were running legacy software that couldn't be patched or easily replaced.
The Solution
We conducted a comprehensive assessment using passive monitoring techniques that provided visibility without any risk to production systems. This identified 47 vulnerabilities across network architecture, access controls, and system configurations.
Working closely with operations teams, we designed and implemented network segmentation that isolated OT systems from IT networks while maintaining necessary data flows. Legacy systems that couldn't be patched were protected with compensating controls including network isolation and enhanced monitoring.
All remediation was performed during scheduled maintenance windows or using techniques that didn't require system downtime, achieving zero impact on production schedules.
